We’re excited to share a key update on Initiative I-2024-01, which aims to repeal the Healthy Children’s Fund property tax (Proposition 5), now exceeding $100 million in property tax burden on Whatcom County residents. This tax is especially unaffordable following the largest tax increase in Washington state history during the last legislative session, placing an unprecedented financial strain on our families. The Washington State Court of Appeals, Division I, has scheduled an oral argument hearing for September 19, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. before Judges Mann, Chung, and Bowman at One Union Square, 600 University Street, Seattle, WA 98101. Each side will have 10 minutes to present their case, challenging the Whatcom County Superior Court’s ruling that blocked I-2024-01 from the November 2024 ballot due to an alleged contracts clause violation. This hearing is a crucial step toward ensuring that Whatcom County voters have their say, and we’re optimistic about overturning this massive tax to restore affordability. You’re invited to support this effort in person by attending the hearing at the Court of Appeals in Seattle, where you can witness the proceedings firsthand. For those unable to attend, the oral argument will be streamed live on TVW (available at tvw.org), providing public access to this pivotal moment. Mark your calendars for 9:30 a.m. on September 19, 2025, to watch or join us!
To fund this critical legal battle, Washingtonians for a Sound Economy has set a new fundraising goal of $10,000 to cover the significant costs of appellate court preparation and presentation.
